FEATURED GRADUATE
Christopher Owens/ Account Planning Bootcamp Graduate 1999
My name is Christopher Owens.
I’m a Miami Ad School Account Planning Boot Camp grad from 1999.
Simply put, it’s one of the best things I ever did for my career.
Here’s my confession.
I was born and raised in the Midwest around Columbus, Ohio.
My first love was music – specifically, drumming and percussion.
This led me to the University of North Texas where I eventually ditched my jazz studies for degrees in language and communications. That, however, did not end my musical aspirations. After college, I hit the road playing drums in a ska band. Who wouldn’t?
Eventually, my affinity for media, communications and pop culture collided when I discovered the discipline of account planning while working at a small agency in Dallas. For a year or two – I was the planning department. I was flying solo, reading books (and what little was on the Web back then) without other planners around to interact with or learn from. Sound familiar?
But, I fixed that.
In 1999, I attended the Miami Ad School’s second ever Account Planning Boot Camp in Miami where I graduated “Top Dog” – Woof! My goal was to test myself to truly figure out whether or not I had what it takes. Things went well.
I joined The Richards Group in March 2000, where I lead planning efforts for a broad range of brands – like Nokia, The Home Depot and TV Guide. Today, I’m a multiple Effie award-winning Brand Planning Group Head leading efforts for the Patron Spirits Company, Sub-Zero Freezer Company, GameStop and Red Lobster. I travel way too much and am invited to speak regularly on branding and other “plannerly” topics around the world from Tokyo, Japan to that other school in Richmond, VA :)
I owe much of these experiences to my great stint in Miami – and am most proud of being the first grad to ever be invited back to actually teach at the Boot Camp. I’ve done it twice now – and love the chance to fire up a new generation of planning minds whenever the need arises.
In my free time, I’m busy teaching Advertising Research as an adjunct professor at SMU in Dallas as well as raising two young daughters, Ivy and Ella, with my lovely wife Mary.
As for my drumming, I hold high hopes for a ska revival reunion tour in the future. I’ll keep you posted.
